Biographical Summary

Fred Koehn was born in Oak Park, Illinois.  He is a self-taught photographer who purchased his first camera at the age of fourteen and began a life-long pursuit of developing his photographic skills.  While in high school, his father helped him build a darkroom in the basement of his house, where he became skilled at processing and printing, as well as capturing images.

After graduating from high school and attending University of Illinois, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1963.  Mr. Koehn was employed by Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector from 1963-2004  in various technical capacities.

In 1964, Mr. Koehn took his first trip to the Superstition Wilderness Area, where he captured his first photographs of the area.  Since then, Mr. Koehn has devoted himself to exploring, experiencing and photographically documenting the Superstition Wilderness Area and the Sierra Nevada Wilderness.  He has spent literally years in the wilderness, preferring intense weather conditions to clear days, in order to seek out those moments in which nature and the wilderness enlighten, shock, delight, and amaze us.
